Don’t buy an Internet Contract

Times are tough for most South Africans these days, but for many, internet connectivity is a “Must Have” in the information age. So why are people committing themselves to unnecessary expensive contracts either for ADSL/VDSL, Fibre- Optic system or LTE Advanced. These systems commit the user to monthly outlays of a minimum R400 (R4800 per year) for the slowest speed contracts. ADSL/VDSL requires a Telephone line with a rental of R199 per month when most people already have Cellphones, on top of their contract and installation costs. Fibre service providers offer easy “Opt-Out” clauses but if enacted then charge the customer for the initial installation plus the “Free” modem at market rates and also fail to mention that the fibre supply company will charge R1000 to connect you to another service provider. Some LTE Advanced contracts offer a “Free” modem the price of which is built into the contact price, others charge up front. Contract customers are committed to their monthly fee regardless of whether they use it or not, or can afford it or not. When ADSL and Fibre customers go on holiday or move house then not only can they not take it with them but then have to pay for another internet source.
